This week's Minute with Mayor McKibbin December 5, 2024 in Community This week's column from Oberon Mayor Andrew McKibbin can be seen here. The first paragraph is particularly disconcerting for Oberon Matters. A statement about this will be released shortly. And here's the statement: There were plans to produce a printed newspaper reflecting the content of the web site. It was hoped that the first printed paper would come out early in 2025, and work was done on costing and other concerns. Unfortunately, a print competitor surfaced in late 2024 offering an inferior product (three pages of Oberon news a fortnight against a proposed 8-12 pages a week for Oberon Matters) but with a significant financial advantage. As the competitor would be adding Oberon coverage to a quite large already existing circulation, someone with experience in estimating printing costs suggested that the cost for the competitor to enter the Oberon market would be about one sixth of what Oberon Matters would have to pay for printing and distribution. They will also soak up advertising revenue as apparently they can afford to pay someone to sell space. Disappointingly, the competitor has the support and backing of Oberon Council. Plans for a print edition have been put on hold. One day, maybe.

A bit of change at the railway November 14, 2024 in Community The regular Open Days at the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway are no more. The OTHR committee had this to say:
The Committee has decided, effective immediately, that as we push towards our goal of a heritage passenger service to Hazelgrove that our regular Open Days held on the 1st Saturday of each month will be suspended. There will be no Open Day tomorrow, November 2nd and onwards. This decision will free up volunteer time to facilitate the establishment of passenger operations. Oberon Matters will miss dropping in for morning tea after the Farmers' Market, but anything that can hasten the reopening of the line must be welcomed.
