| Moron Alert May 1, 2025 in General News There have been some examples recently of people with very limited brain capacity damaging things around Oberon. None of the behaviour is life-threatening, more just a nuisance, but it affects everyone who likes to go through life without idiots making life difficult. See some examples here | | |
A quiet week in the school holidays May 1, 2025 in Schools With all the schools on holidays there wasn't much going on in the education arena, but the schools were well represented at the ANZAC Day march and ceremonies. And there was a bit of other news, too. See some pictures here
| A sporting long weekend May 1, 2025 in Sport After a long Easter weekend when all the sports seemed to take a holiday, it was back to almost normal this week. Senior League had the wins, Junior League had the mud, the soccer, sorry, football players had mixed results. And the golfers had four days doing whatever it is that golfers do. See the results here | | |

Congratulations to Andrew Gee May 8, 2025 in General News Oberon Matters would like to congratulate Andrew Gee for his reelection as the federal Member for Calare, and we look forward to seeing him around the electorate in the future. There was some nastiness during the campaign but his main opponent, Nationals Sam Farraway, was gracious in defeat. While the overall result for the election across the country was unexpected by all sides of politics (but not apparently, the bookmakers), we are lucky in Australia that everyone gets on after an election even if half of us are disappointed in the result.
Oberon's schools are back from the break May 8, 2025 in Schools With the holidays over, everyone is back at school doing the sorts of things that make schooling interesting. And there's pumpkins too! See the school report card here
| Citius, Altius, Fortius is Latin for Sport May 8, 2025 in Sport There might have been an election on this weekend but that didn't stop people getting out and playing sport. (Nobody knows what it takes to keep golfers off the course.) See some results here | | |
Visitor statistics May 8, 2025 in General News Here is what has happened around this site over the last three months "Unique visitors" counts IP addresses that have connected to the site at least once during the month. It doesn't include search engines, but even if it did Google and Bing (who index the site at least once a week) would only be counted as one visitor each. It is the equivalent of "Circulation" for print media. Media release: Oberon's water supply May 8, 2025 in Community If you have noticed your tap water has a funny taste recently, there's nothing unhealthy going on, just a natural and occasional problem. Oberon Council have issued this media release to explain what's happening. See the media release here
| Oberon's New Living Treasures May 15, 2025 in Community and People A community is made up of the people in it and their stories. If you walk through Oberon Common you can see a wall of images of Oberon's Treasures - people who helped make the history of Oberon. But those treasures were declared many years ago, so the Oberon Museum has embarked on a project to capture the stories of current living Treasures. See the story of the new Treasures here | | |

| Teaching the town to sing May 15, 2025 in Music The New Seekers and the Hilltop Singers wanted to teach the world to sing, but a slightly less ambitious project was to take some of Oberon's residents and teach them to sing. You can see and hear the story here | | |
More raffle winners May 15, 2025 in Community There always seems to be at least one raffle being sold somewhere along the Oberon Street shopping precinct, but there's one you should look out for every Friday outside IGA. It's the fundraiser for the Oberon Men's Shed, and the prizes are very worthwhile. Prizes vary from raffle to raffle, and can include trailer loads of wood as well as vouchers for groceries or products from other stores. The raffles are drawn when they are fully subscribed. The proceeds of these raffles will help to ensure the future of the Men's Shed. Definitely a worthy cause. And you might even win something. See the results of the latest raffle here

Scammers! The lowest form of life May 22, 2025 in Community and Opinion If you are a member of any of Oberon's community Facebook groups you will have seen people offering data entry jobs with high pay and flexible working hours. These jobs do not exist. The people posting the pretend advertisements have invariably joined the group within the previous few days and it is reasonable to assume that they are using false names, with new names being invented as the originals get blocked by admins. As they didn't like people commenting about their lies, their posts now have comments disabled. The only purpose of these advertisements is to gather information to be used for other purposes. And do they care if you don't like what they do? See here for some interactions with the vermin. Note that one of them didn't care about being insulted and both had left Facebook after a couple of days.

Check your smoke alarm May 29, 2025 in Community Fire and Rescue NSW is partnering with emergency services in NSW and around Australia for Smoke Alarm Action Day to take place on Sunday June 1, 2025. This is an annual nationwide day of action where the community is asked to take action and test their smoke alarms. Households can scan the QR code and request a free home fire safety visit where Firefighters will come to your home, check alarms, and install new ones if needed. A working smoke alarm halves the risk of fatality in a home fire, yet alarmingly, nearly half of the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in NSW do not have a working smoke alarm. Click for the poster and QR code
