Council election
September 19, 2024 in Community
The preliminary results of the September 14 council election are available. The count so far shows that four candidates have achieved the quota of votes needed for election. Note that the final count will not be known for two weeks, but these quotas are unlikely to change very much.
- Frank O'Connor (1.59 quotas)
- Katie Graham (1.17)
- Clive McCarthy (1.27)
- Andrew McKibbin (1)
Three more are likely following distribution of preferences:
- Helen Hayden (0.97)
- Lauren Trembath (0.8)
- Anthony Alevras (0.71)
These results are as at 13:39 on Wednesday, September 18. The last date for delivery of postal votes is Friday, September 27, with final results announced on Thursday, October 3. As final distribution of preferences can't be done until all postal and declaration votes have been included, any progressive counts are only an indication until the official results are declared by the NSW Electoral Commission.
The first meeting of the new Council will be on Tuesday, October 15, where the only business will be swearing in the elected Councillors and the election of the Mayor.
Let's go camping September 19, 2024 in Community It was a weekend when except for the Council elections not much was going on around Oberon, so Oberon Matters drove around to some free camping spots in the area and pointed the camera at things. See all the photos from six sites here

"And the winner is..."
September 19, 2024 in Community
Oberon Men's Shed's first "Cost of Living" raffle was drawn on Monday September 16. Guest drawer of the winning tickets was Mr Meat himself, Wayne Barker of "Pleased to meet you, meat to please you" fame.
We managed to drag his thumb off the scales for long enough to announce that the first prize of $300 of meat of their choice went to Mel Fitzpatrick, second prize winner of $150 of meat was Gavin Rea and third prize winner of $50 of meat was Jacqui Burke.
Congratulations to all prize winners and we're sure that those prizes will ease the cost of living for all of them, and a special thanks to Wayne Barker for participating with the Oberon Men's Shed raffle.

Climate symposium
August 29, 2024 in Community
Updated October 17, 2024
Over the weekend of August 24 and 25 three sessions of a symposium on climate change were held at Lake Oberon Estate. As a lot of issues were raised over a short period of time (see here), a full report will have to wait until some research has been done. Also, a review of speaker Professor Ian Plimer's book Green Murder will appear after the time needed to read and digest the almost 600 pages. It will be paired with a review of Humanity's Moment, the latest book from climate scientist Joëlle Gergis. (See the reviews here.)

Let's acknowledge the sponsors August 29, 2024 in Community and Business Oberon is noted for its generosity, and one way that this is shown is by the level of support for things happening around the area. The Oberon Business and Tourism Association Inc is very grateful to the businesses of Oberon which generously sponsored the 2024 Oberon Business Awards. Click for a larger view of the image
It was rather ironic that two of the sponsors, NAB and Oberon Review, had abandoned Oberon and ceased doing business there before the gala presentation night when the winners were announced. |

Let's think about mental health August 15, 2024 in Community It's hardly a secret that there's a crisis in mental health management and treatment, particularly away from the major cities and centres of population. Resources are limited and tend to be focused at the extreme end by addressing suicide, with little help for those with non-suicidal depression or anxiety. See some things being done about this, plus a teaser for a documentary
