July 2, 2026 in Community and People

The people at Fire and Rescue NSW Station 411 Oberon have a bit to say about an employee:

Emma has been with us less than six months and already making a huge impact on our station with her boundless energy and youthful enthusiasm!

We’re very very proud to announce that Emma will be representing Fire and Rescue NSW FRNSW Sports Association when they take on NSW Corrections in July and rumour has it will be further representing the firies more this year.

Emma is no stranger to the sport previously playing Union for Penrith Emus Rugby Club, League for Panorama Platypi Women's Rugby League and currently plays soccer for Abercrombie FC.

We wish Emma and our league teams all the best!

First round of firefighters braved the cold and wet on May 24 and completed their annual fitness test, some having more fun with it than others.

A new wave of romance scams is washing across the internet - here's how to stay safe
February 19, 2026 in Community and People

Scam warnings aren't a rarity here at Oberon Matters but this one is important. An Oberon resident is facing homelessness and bankruptcy because she has become the victim of a romance scam. The "lover" in question claims to be a major star in a big US TV series but she has to keep sending him money to cover some debts and to pay for his air ticket to Australia. Of course he always has an excuse for why he missed the plane. Friends have tried to intervene but she will not be convinced and even tries to find ways to get around caveats that helpers have had placed to prevent her selling her possessions.

This article from The Conversation puts the case for extreme caution and even more extreme skepticism.
