| Don't be a dropout August 27, 2026 in Schools Very good advice there from the great James Brown, but nobody's dropping out of the schools around Oberon. There's too much to do and learn there. Catch up on the school news here | | | |
Hey, teacher, teach those kids some more August 20, 2026 in Schools Despite what you might hear in some popular songs, the students at the schools around Oberon aren't just bricks in the wall. They are too busy learning things and doing educational activities. There's music, there's sport, there's zoos to visit. And more. See this week's action here
| What did you learn today? August 13, 2026 in Schools Lots! Including caves and cranes. Another educational week (and it was Education Week) for the schools around Oberon. Check out the stories here | | | |
Photos of children on the Internet August 6, 2026 in General News, Schools and Sport It's a tragedy of our times that anything can be abused by perverts. The latest is that AI systems are being used to exploit photos of children by removing clothing or putting other heads on bodies. The world's largest pornography site, PornHub, recently banned one of their advertisers who was paying a million dollars a year to advertise AI-generated child porn. That company is Australian. Elon Musk is threatening to sue a US state because it has banned Musk's Grok AI for the ease with which it can be used to produce images of naked children. Musk claims this is an infringement of free speech, a statement that renders sane people speechless. Legitimate search engines are blocked from indexing any images on this site but it is almost impossible to prevent web site content from being scavenged by AI robots and the only alternative is to not publish photos, so over the next few weeks I will be going through all the sports and school reports on the site and removing any photos in which kids can be identified. (This tiny and obscure site is continually trawled by AI bots, although all except ChatGPT try to remain anonymous. The papers published by Nine Entertainment are currently being hit 30,000,000 times a month by AI content thieves. It is work for several people just to try to keep up with the blocking.) The two articles below from The Conversation address the danger of putting your kids' photos online.
| Whole lotta learning going on August 6, 2026 in Schools In the chilly hours and minutes of an Oberon day, the schools keep on filling students' heads with facts and stories. You can see what went on last week here | | | |
I like schoolin' and I'm not foolin' July 30, 2026 in Schools The educating (and sporting) keeps going on at the schools around Oberon. The stories are here
| School life gradually returns July 26, 2026 in Schools It's a slow start to the term but there are things going on behind the curtain. See some of the action here | | | |
School Daze July 23, 2026 in Schools Schools were still closed for the holidays last week, but a book review I wrote reminded me of this article I wrote some time ago for Australasian Science magazine about a perennial and dangerous teaching practice which keeps arriving uninvited into schools. See the article here
| Left Behind: Transitioning to Work Getting Tougher July 16, 2026 in Schools Research carried out for the Smith Family points to a disappointing employment future for students who leave high school before Year 12. This is possibly a bigger problem for students in regional areas who might have an even narrower range of job possibilities than students living in more highly populated cities. Read the media release from the Smith Family here | | | |
School's out! So sang Alice. July 9, 2026 in Schools The original song said "School's out for summer" but Oberon doesn't feel like summer right now, so we will have to make allowances. The last week of term was still filled with activities, with no winding down for the schools around the town. Find the end of term reports here
