This week's Moron AlertJune 18, 2026 The idiots are at it again. Thank you to Councillor Helen Hayden for the following story. June 13, 2026 There is always one idiot - or in my opinion a complete flog. Sometime between yesterday afternoon and 4pm today, someone thought it would be a great idea to take their four-wheel drive into the new Oberon Sports Complex, drive up the embankments, across the netball courts and spin out onto the hockey field. Seriously... what is wrong with people? This is a multi-million-dollar community facility that is still being developed for our kids, our sporting clubs, our families and the wider community. It is not your personal off-road playground. Because of behaviour like this, the whole community ends up paying the price through repairs, delays and additional costs. We simply can't have nice things when a handful of idiots decide that doing burnouts and tearing up sporting fields is somehow impressive. If anyone saw a four-wheel drive in the complex during that time, or has any information, please send me a private message or report it to Council. Even the smallest piece of information could help identify those responsible. And to the driver: own what you've done. Front up, apologise and take responsibility before the cameras do the talking for you. It takes far more character to admit a mistake than it does to hide behind a steering wheel pretending to be a hero. Our community deserves better than this, and its a pity you didn't get bogged.
Oberon Matters opinion When Councillor Hayden posted this to Facebook there was the expected disgust and blaming of tourists (with no evidence that it wasn't some local lout), but what was amazing was people defending the vandalism by saying that there aren't any places around Oberon where young people can learn to drive on dirt so things like this might be expected. According to the Forestry Corporation there are 59,309 hectares of state forests around Oberon - Blenheim, Dog Rocks, Essington, Gurnang, Hampton, Jenolan, Lowes Mount, Mount David and Vulcan (80,419 if you want to drive a little further to Lidsdale or Sunny Corner). There are lots of dirt roads in those forests. There is a 60km/h speed limit but that shouldn't bother people who can't control a car at walking speed in a Sports Complex. Bathurst Light Car Club runs regular events at The Quarry at the back of Mount Panorama and beginners are always welcome. Lithgow District Car Club runs events about monthly at the Yvonne Martyn grounds near Portland. Again, beginners are always welcome. There will be an event on June 20. It's a bit late to get a Motorsport Australia licence but anyone is invited to come along and watch how it's done. Hills District Car Club has an event at their ground in Hampton on June 21. As with Lithgow, it's a bit late to get a Motorsport Australia licence but come along anyway to see how "easy" it is.
The problem with all of these for the sort of clowns who vandalise other people's property is that if they entered one of these events their pathetic lack of driving skills would be exposed for all to see. I must point out to these idiots that if you drive a 300kw car in a rally you are prohibited from spinning the wheels when starting a stage (it's called "No Spin Start") and if you do it twice in an event you can put your Lancer EVO or Subaru STi or Escort BDA back on the trailer and go home. See also: Moron Alert! to show that this sort of idiocy is not unique to driving on dirt.
