AMSAG 2026 Oberon RallyNovember 5, 2026 With 1,200 photos taken at the event to go through, a tyre damaged by the rocky nature of Riverview Forest Road which had to be replaced and a day out of the work week to attend a function in Sydney, this report is necessarily brief. A fuller report of the rally will come next week. PB
On Saturday, October 31, rallying returned to the forests around Oberon after a pause of two years. This event was organised by the Australian Motor Sport Action Group (AMSAG) and was the final round of the 2026 Southern Cross Rally Series. The event was based at Black Springs, with the service park in the Avoca Reserve and administration (and food) in the Black Springs Community Hall (thanks to the Black Springs Community Association for the catering). There were 45 starters and all competitive stages were in Vulcan State Forest. All anyone can say about the weather on the day was "Oberon" - hot, cold, windy and raining at various times in the day, but the threatening snow clouds held back from making it a full sample of Oberon weather possibilities. The roads in Vulcan State Forest were excellent (thank you, Forestry Corporation) but lived up to the reputation of the geology being a bit hard on tyres. Oberon Matters was really careful about sliding the car and still managed to damage one tyre (on the final bit of dirt road going back to Black Springs!), but the competitor who lent a wheelbrace to change the OM tyre had three punctures, his first flats with that brand of tyre for two years. Still, tyre damage is part of the rallying experience and anyone who never breaks a tyre isn't trying hard enough. First ten placegetters (and yes, two of the ten hit kangaroos during the day):
