A wet weekend of sport

April 11, 2024

Heavy rain on Friday night caused some problems for sports planning to have games on Saturday. The matches involving the Wolves soccer players were cancelled because the field at Bathurst was saturated and the Woodbridge Cup matches between CSU and the Oberon Tigers were relocated to Oberon.

Rugby League - Tigers

The only effect the rain had on the Tigers was that it caused the Woodbridge Cup first round against CSU to be moved from the flooded CSU ground to Oberon. Maybe it was the sudden decision to make it a home game that inspired the Tigers to slaughter the opposition.

The League Taggers had a 14 - 0 victory over the CSU Mungals, and the men followed this with a 46 - 10 victory. The game was called off ten minutes early because CSU unfortunately suffered from a few injuries. As CSU scoring 37 points in ten minutes was unlikely (!), nobody complained about the early finish. CSU must be thanked for travelling at very short notice after preparing for a home match.

No photos, unfortunately.

The next round will be on Sunday, April 14, against Cowra, again at Oberon.

Over at the golf course

After a week of high temp, high humidity training in Darwin resulting in the shedding of numerous kilos, Anthony Miller coasted around in even par 70 nett (84 gross) for the win in the A-Grade April medal from Kim Rawlings at +1 (on a countback).

In B-Grade Calum Hay with a +1 71 (nett 93) won over Garry Willis who put together a +4 74 (nett 91). The course played longer after the overnight rain but Hamish Anderson and Rob McGrath both had 73s for the rounds of the day. Other highlights included Andrew Yeo's birdies on 7 and 8, Hamish's birdies on 3, 5 and 15, Marty's birdies on 3 and 4, Neil also on 3 and 4, and Phoenix on 3 and a quite noisy chip-in on 17.

Golf isn't just about getting around the course as quickly as possible. There can be time for relaxing too. There are some great corners of the golf course with wonderful craftsmanship on display that add so much to the golf experience. One nice little spot is this seat on the 4th tee seen here framed by Anthony McGrath, Barry Lang and Garry Willis. Harold Lyme put a lot of work into building the rock wall along the tee and the seat was added by Michael English and Jack English. Perfect for a brief rest if you are waiting for the 4th fairway to clear or to sip on a glass of something refreshing while watching the sun set over the lake.

Lawn Bowls

Congratulations to the Oberon RSL bowls club in their first round of the Open Gender Pennants (Grade 6) taking on Millthorpe last Sunday April 7. All 3 teams, skippered by Hans, John and Bruce, won their rinks meaning they maximised the scoring potential taking all 10 points on the day. A magnificent effort and very well done to every member of the teams.

This convincing win demonstrates the ongoing improvement of every individual and a credit to the selectors placing players within the teams in their strongest position.

This coming Sunday April 14 , starting at 11:00am, sees the teams taking on Conowindra at home in Oberon. Why not come down and lend your support?

The Oberon RSL opens at 10:00am and you can grab your balcony seat for an awesome view of these top athletes in action as they look to carve up the opposition and enjoy a drink or two as they do (they certainly will be !)
