Lower speed limits to deliver safer trips on Jenolan Caves Road

The speed limit on three sections of Jenolan Caves Road will be reduced for the safety of all road users.
Transport for NSW conducted a speed zone review along a 37-kilometre section of Jenolan Caves Road in response to community concerns about the speed limits, road condition and alignment of the road, particularly around Good Forest.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Damien Pfeiffer said the review assessed a number of factors including location, crash history, road environment, the number of access points, road usage, traffic mix and traffic volumes, and determined a speed limit reduction would increase safety in three sections of the road.
"Jenolan Caves Road is a scenic drive through the beautiful Australian bush and has many crests and curves along its length," Mr Pfeiffer said.
"The review, which covered the section of road stretching from the intersection with the Great Western Highway to the northern end of Five Mile, identified a number of areas of higher risk for motorists with narrow cross sections and hazardous roadside environments where lower speed limits were deemed appropriate.
"The existing speed limits will remain in place for the rest of the road."
As a result of the speed zone review, the following changes will come into effect from Wednesday 23 September:
The 80 km/h speed zone from 1.4 kilometres to 3.5 kilometres south of the Great Western Highway, near Coxs River, will be reduced to 60 km/h (a length of 2.1 kilometres) The 100 km/h speed zone from 7.4 kilometres to 18.1 kilometres south of the Great Western Highway will be reduced to 90 km/h (10.7 kilometres) The existing 100 km/h speed zone from 24.2 kilometres to 37.3 kilometres south of the Great Western Highway will be reduced to 80 km/h (13.1 kilometres).
The changes better align with the surrounding speed environment and better reflect the road safety risk on each section of Jenolan Caves Road, providing a safer and more appropriate outcome for all road users.
