More marvellous music at the Malachi

September 18, 2025

The audience at the Malachi Gilmore Hall on Saturday, September 13, were treated to a real treat - a return performance by saxophonist Nick Russoniello. The show was based around his composition "Air Mass" and Nick has been touring it all over the place.

To start the show Nick performed his own 2018 composition "Valse Rudy".

Here's the first two minutes of the piece. If you want to hear the rest you will have to buy a copy of the CD (details below).

This was not recorded on the day but comes from the "The Golden Age Project" CD

The program was not what you would expect from either a jazz saxophonist or a classical performer, containing a mixture of both, plus some surprising adaptations of popular music.

Following the first piece, the remainder of the program was:

  • "Hey Ya!" (2000) by Outkast
  • "Echo Me" (2024) from "Air Mass"
  • "Fantasia No 8" (1732) by Georg Philipp Telemann
  • "Air Mass" (2024
  • "Bird Song" (2024) from "Air Mass"
  • "Main Song" (2024) from "Air Mass"
  • "Syrinx" (1913) by Claude Debussy
  • "Liquid Mass" (2024) from "Air Mass"

Played on all sorts of saxes, with the occasional help from looping electronics. To make ordinary musicians feel very ordinary, one piece sounded like all three saxes at once in a trio but was done without electronic help.

The final piece was something you wouldn't expect anywhere - a mix of Daft Punk tunes. For this, drumming on the baritone sax case added an extra instrument. If this sounds a bit weird, it worked very well.

Here's the first two minutes of the mix.

If you get a chance to see Nick perform don't miss it. Whether he is with a group or performing solo you are guaranteed a greet musical experience.

To hear more you should listen to the CD "The Golden Age Project", which is available from wherever you buy your records or from Nick Russoniello's web site where you can find out all you need to know about Nick and his appearances and projects.

Keep watching What's Now for future events at the Malachi Gilmore Hall.
