This week's Minute with Mayor McKibbinOctober 15, 2026
September and early October have been busy, with submissions being prepared on a number of matters affecting local government and our communities. Personally, l have been involved in answering questions from the Emergency Services' Levy Legislative Assembly Reform Committee on the proposed changes to the methodology for levying and calculating the levy which will affect all property owners. Responses were due on October 6. Similarly, the NSW Government Grants Commission is asking for submissions in response to its changed methodology for distributing Federal Assistance Grants (FAG) to Councils. Under the proposal many councils like Oberon will be better off but others will suffer a reduction in grants. Again, Oberon Council provided a submission in response to the proposal. There is also an inquiry on the remuneration of Councillors and Mayors. The Mayors of the Central NSW Joint organisation met via teams to discuss a coordinated response, led by Blayney Mayor Bruce Reynolds, ahead of the 9 October deadfine. Superintendent Susie Johnston, Chifley Police District Commander, held a meeting with mayors and general managers from across the district on Friday, 25 September 2026, at the Oberon Library and Community Centre. The Chifley Police District covers Bathurst, Lithgow, Blayney, Oberon, and Cowra local government areas. The level of crime in the area has not increased and is relatively stable attendees were informed. When questioned about illegal tobacconists the Superintendent informed the meeting the primary responsibility lies with NSW Health. Police can only attend if requested to by NSW Health to close a premises. All investigative and other work is done by NSW Health and Police respond when requested to by NSW Health or to support NSW Health. This was a revelation for attendees who believed this fell within police powers. There has been very sad news in the Oberon Community with two cherished and admired members of our Council community, Sharon lnwood and Lyn Hancox, having recently passed away. Sharon was Facilities Manager at the Oberon Fitness and Leisure Centre and was admired for her dedication to the health and wellbeing of our community that spanned over four decades. During her time with Council, Lyn held several roles, including administrative positions with Service NSW and Planning. She was also a familiar and much-loved voice at Council community events, performing the National Anthem on many occasions. On behalf of Council, l extend out heartfelt condolences to Sharon and Lyn's families and friends. Both made valued contributions to our community and will be greatly missed. Andrew McKibbin
