There's a new fireperson in townOctober 23, 2025 Here's an announcement from the Oberon Fire Station. We're very excited to introduce the newest firefighter at 411: Tara Steward!
What sparked your interest in Fire and Rescue NSW ultimately leading you to put in your application? I grew up in a rural area which was often threatened by bushfires in summer. As a kid, I wished I could do something more than watch the news and monitor the progress of the fire. So, when the opportunity to join FRNSW came up, I jumped at it. I'm pretty new to the job so I'm sure my answers will change in a year's time (I haven't rescued a kitten yet, but I'm sure that's coming!), but so far, I love having a career where looking after my health and fitness is part of my job so I can better help other people. Is there anything to do with fire safety in the home that came as a surprise to you? Before joining FRNSW, I thought lithium ion batteries were only found in e-bikes. I've learned that lithium ion batteries are found in everyday household items such as power tools, phones and laptops. They're not a problem in themselves, but they need to be looked after (e.g. charged with correct chargers) properly disposed of through battery recycling because they can combust. They are a relatively unknown, but easily preventable cause of household fires. Do you have any advice to anyone interested in putting in an application to become an on-call (paid part-time) firefighter especially females? Fire & Rescue can be viewed a male-dominated field, but it's as much a job for women as it is for men. I felt instantly welcomed by the team, and the team is quick to encourage me as I learn the ropes. There's more to the job than fighting fires, though that's pretty important! We also do rescues, home safety visits and engage with the other emergency agencies in our area to serve the community. Comprehensive training is provided and the team is incredibly supportive of all recruits. If you're fit and you want to make a difference in people's lives year-round, I'd be the first to encourage you to join FRNSW. Applications for on-call (paid part-time) firefighters with Fire and Rescue in Oberon are now open. Go to the station's Facebook page for more information on how you can serve your community.
