It's bushfire season. Be aware.October 2, 2025 The start of October is the start of the official bushfire season and the time to remember what to do and not to do. A combined effort by the Rural Fire Service, the State Emergency Service and St John's Ambulance reminded Oberon of this at a recent demonstration.
Before you even think of lighting a fire out in the open, please talk to the RFS, SES or Fire and Rescue about the rules. Oberon was very lucky in 2019-20 when the state was on fire, but down near Tumut they lost an area of pine forest almost the combined size of all the pine forests around here (just one plantation was equal to Vulcan and Gurnag combined) and the mill at Tumut won't recover for a generation. Then there are grass fires, which spread faster than ones it trees. An out of control fire near here on a day with a lot of wind could do a lot of damage to two of the town's biggest industries.
