June 2025 Oberon Council Meeting
June 19, 2025
The first item on the agenda for the June 17 meeting was a presentation by Sean Haylan, General Manager Destination Central West, who provided an overview of the activities of Destination Central West and highlighted the benefits of the visitor economy to the Oberon community. A rescission motion had been lodged regarding the approval at a prior meeting of three facilities to measure wind speeds as part of the investigation into the feasibility of the Pines Wind Farm. The rescission motion was supported by a seven-page legal opinion.
The motion was withdrawn and will be brought up again at a special Council meeting on June 30. Something of interest to all ratepayers is how much Councillors are paid.
The draft 2025-26 council budget included a possible 5% rise, but after much discussion the motion was amended to disallow any rise in Councillor remuneration for the coming year. Imagine that - Councillors voting against a pay rise for themselves. Strange, but true. Something that was expected to produce strong opinions was an item about possible roadwork that would be needed to get the components of the Paling Yards wind farm up the climb onto the Oberon Plateau.
This was supported by some indications of the suggested work.
There was some suggestion that Council had the legal power to simply refuse permission for GPG to use the road under any circumstances. It was resolved to have a meeting with GPG to discuss the legalities of the proposal; this meeting will be open to the public and streamed online, and the time and date will be announced when known. The rest of the night was mainly rubber stamping development applications and Council staff reports. There was one interesting point, however, in the Technical Services Director's report - cockatoos (or maybe corellas) have been doing a great but unwanted job aerating the turf at Cunynghame Oval.
