Latin Music and Drumming

April 10, 2025

Is there a better way to spend a lazy Friday afternoon that sitting around in the Malachi Gilmore Hall learning how to do rhythms and paradiddles with your hands on a drum? On Friday, March 28, local drummers and a group of students from St Joseph's Catholic School had a chance to test the theory at a drumming workshop conducted by members of Sydney bands Caribé and ALLY, amazing musicians from Sydney’s Cuban, jazz and Latin communities who have been a favourite at music festivals and Latin dances around Australia for many years. The musicians doing the teaching were saxophonist Gai Bryant, pianist Daniel Pliner and bassist Cesar Marin.

ALLY have performed and conducted workshops for BOOM! International Festival of Percussion, Bellingen Muse, Sydney Sacred Music Festival, Sydney Afro-Latin Festival, Inland Sea of Sound and Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. NRC Lismore, Salsa Caliente Mullumbimby, El Horses Nowra, Blue Mountains Theatre, Kandos High School, Orange Regional Conservatorium, Parkes Latin Sounds at the Pavilion and more.
