An Australia Day Party

January 30, 2025

There were so many things on around Oberon on Australia day so Oberon Matters had to make some choices. After the official ceremony at the Community Centre it was time to head to the garden next to the Tourist Hotel for Edmund Power's final Hungry Hare feast. (Someone has bought the hotel, and as soon as he can be tracked down the story might be told about the pub's future.)

The idea was to drop into the lunch, have a beer and a chat, and then move on to the next Australia Day activity. Five minutes turned into three and a half hours, but who needed to be in a hurry anyway? After a trip to Tarana for the markets it was noted that there was still a group in the garden about six hours after lunch started, so nobody could say the day wasn't a success. Special thanks have to go to Irene, Rebecca and Cass for the work they put in to bring the picnic together. The event raised over $2,000 for Oberon Hospital.

Perfect weather and good company. Who could ask for anything more?

Prawns! Potato salad! You can't get more Aussie that that.

By Mushroom Records, Albert ProductionsEdmund's big announcement mentioned above is that he will be standing as an Independent candidate in the coming federal election. Exciting times ahead.

It was pleasing to see that one great Australian tradition was observed on the day. Australian music was being played (of course) and when the song "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?" by the Angels came on Oberon Matters just happened to be at the end of the table that enthusiastically joined in with the mandatory call and response. (Note - don't click on the link if you plan to be offended.)
