October 2024 Oberon Council Meeting

October 17, 2024

The major items on the agenda for the first meeting of Oberon Council after the election were the swearing in of the Councillors and the election of the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The members of the Council are:

  • Frank O'Connor
  • Katie Graham*
  • Clive McCarthy*
  • Andrew McKibbin*
  • Helen Hayden*
  • Jill O'Grady
  • Ian Tucker*
  • Anthony Alevras
  • Lauren Trembath*
  • (The asterisk indicates a reelected Councillor)

The original agenda for the meeting had the elections to be held by show of hands, but it was moved and carried that there should be a secret ballot. Two candidates stood for election as Mayor (Andrew McKibbin and Frank O'Connor) and Andrew McKibbin was elected Mayor for the next two years. The election for Deputy Mayor attracted four candidates (Frank O'Connor, Helen Hayden, Ian Tucker and Katie Graham), with Katie Graham being elected as Deputy Mayor.

Oberon Matters congratulates the new Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors and looks forward to following their activities over the coming months.

The rest of the meeting was uneventful, although the residents of Burraga will be disappointed that the Geographical Names Board rejected the application to change the name of a section of road to "Bill Kowler Drive". The reasons provided were that both given and surname were proposed and that the person was still alive. If you have some time to spare, the policy document relating to road and street names is an alarming 180 pages long (!) and can be seen starting at page 269 of the meeting agenda.

The next Council meeting will be on November 12 at 5:30pm.

The agenda for the meeting can be seen here.
