Snowing on Christmas Day. But when?

February 8, 2024

Every time it snows in Oberon someone mentions the time it snowed on Christmas Day. Questions posed to several local Oberon Facebook groups provided a lot of memories of the occasion.

Snow, but it wasn't on Christmas Day

  • snowed Christmas eve 1982
  • It did when I was little, probably in the late 50's or early 60's. I don't know exactly.
  • I've been here 35 years and it has snowed at Chrissy at least 2 or 3 times during that period. No hard evidence to show for it though.
  • I also remember Christmas day snow.
  • Snowed Christmas 1949
  • We had a very light sprinkling of snow on Christmas day one year, not sure but I'll ask my niece, she brought her 3 kids to Oberon, it was so cold, the kids had never seen snow.
  • Lived there January 1984-January 1993 and I remember it snowing one Christmas Eve
  • Yes it has snowed in Oberon on Christmas Day ,about 1959 . Rather big fall . I remember mum vividly saying ,will you kids stop running around the house ,then traipsing through the house, with your muddy shoes on .
  • Yes it has early 80's because we got bikes and roller skates that year and had to wait for the snow to clear
  • I've been in Oberon since 1986 and I've seen snow falling Christmas Day. Not a lot, but it was snow. Probably over 20 years ago now so given where I was, probably between 1988 and 2002.
  • It snowed here on Christmas Eve the first year we moved up here in 2002. No photos though as it didn't settle.
  • I can remember it but have no idea what year
  • It is true
  • Absolutely true
  • From the Blackheath Weather web site: "1895 - 24th of December - Snow reported at Oberon a few days before  Christmas. 1952 - 12th of December - Light snowlsleet reported for the Blue Mountains. 1993 - 27th of December - Snow reported at Oberon"
  • I was told by my late mother that it snowed Christmas day the year I was born, 1972.
  • It snowed in Oberon on Christmas Day in to late 1950s
  • I can remember it snowing in Oberon 1950s
  • It has definitely snowed in Oberon Christmas day in the 90s....would not know where to find info about though, Oberon Review??
  • I remember it snowing on Christmas Day in the early 90's, we lived at the top of Yetholme then
  • I've been in Oberon since 1986, and I have seen snow falling on Christmas Day during that time. It wasn't much but it was snow. I don't recall the year, but more than 20 years ago.
  • I don't have photos but I do remember it
  • very well. I think I was a young teenager but not sure, I may have been younger. I am now 73 so it was a long time ago
  • Yep i was there, Around 91-93 i think!!!!!
  • Sometime between 1957 and 1965, I recall looking out through a window at Duckmaloi, at snow on the ground on Christmas Day . I recall mum saying how rare and special it was, to have snow at Christmas.
  • I agree I was a kid and remember it. Definitely snowed on Xmas day.
  • Our home was Darling Hills Hazelgrove. I was born 1951 and went to Oberon 1963 so it was between those dates
  • I'm a '54 model and on further reflection, reckon it was likely around 1960.
  • 1962 and 1994 from memory
  • I remember in the mid 70s maybe too...I was only 7 or 8
  • Early 50s we couldn't drive to Sydney for a couple of days. We lived near Sodwalls
  • I grew up in Oberon & remember it snowing on Christmas Day
  • Yes - I remember it well. It was December 1960 and I was in 4th class at school.
  • I remember it snowing on Christmas day would have been late forties early fifties.
  • I think maybe 1957 too as it snowed in Rockley at about that time
  • I remember it......I think it was around 2009 or 2010?
  • It has on quite a few occasions
  • I remember i think either 73 or 74.

Memory is notoriously unreliable, just ask any psychologist, but it seems that the collective memory has it happening although over a wide range of dates.

It has become part of Oberon's mythology and maybe it doesn't really matter if it ever happened. It possibly did, and maybe even probably did, but whether it did or not won't stop everyone from turning to the person next to them when it starts to snow and saying "Remember when it snowed in Oberon on Christmas Day?"

And what do the long-range forecasters predict for Christmas Day 2024? Hot day with clear skies, but knowing Oberon it still might snow.
