Chloe Swannell at the Golf Club
May 28, 2026 in Entertainment

If you were looking for a perfect way to end the week it would be hard to go past having a couple of beers and a good meal while listening to Chloe Swannell at the Oberon Golf Club. Chloe is well known around the district for her musical ability and she didn't disappoint on Sunday, May 24. If you get a chance to see and hear her, make sure you go along.

The recording below contains just a few minutes of the show. Unfortunately it was a tough gig and there was a lot of background noise, but that can't be helped when the performance is in a small club and most of the audience are winding down from a day's sporting action. I wasn't really in a position to tap into the AV feed to pick up just the microphone and guitar but I've heard worse recordings of live performances (he says modestly). The best way to treat this problem is to go along in person to Chloe's next concert.

The bricks are back
May 14, 2026 in Community and Entertainment

It's been too long since Playwell Events brought their amazing LEGO® creations to Oberon, but they were back at the Malachi Gilmore Hall on May 9. 250,000 blocks assembled into things that most of us couldn't imagine, including some that moved!

And now for something completely different - the Omega Ensemble at the Malachi
May 7, 2026 in Entertainment

Sunday, May 3, saw the Omega Ensemble return to the Malachi Gilmore hall, but not with works by Mozart this time. The concert is named "Howl" after one of the program items the group is touring during 2026. It would have come as a surprise to anyone expecting traditional chamber music, but change is what makes things exciting and nobody would have gone away unsatisfied or unhappy.

Something special this way comes
April 30, 2026 in Entertainment

Whatever your plans are for the afternoon of Sunday, May 3, cancel them, because the place to be at 3pm will be the Malachi Gilmore Hall for a performance by the Omega Ensemble. This award winning musical group will be performing "Howl", described as "Riot, rapture and release" and "Uniting five leading contemporary classical voices Howl presents a performance of musical defiance and untamed brilliance".

The show will include works by composers Missy Mazzoli, Anna Meredith, Daniel Wohl, Pierre Jalbert and Danny Elfman (yes that Danny Elfman who scored Tim Burton's films and wrote the theme for "The Simpsons"). They might not be your usual collection of classical music composers but it's always good to approach something new and different.

Bringing back the bricks
April23, 2026 in Community and Entertainment

If you were around town in March 2023 you might remember the excitement about an exhibition of Lego constructions on display at the Malachi Gilmore Hall. Well, the excitement will return to the Malachi on May 9 this year. Mark the date in your diary.

2026 Oberon Shakespeare Festival - The Play's The Thing
April 2, 2026 in Community and Entertainment

You can't really have a Shakespeare Festival without a performance of one of his plays, and this year the 2026 Rotary Oberon Shakespeare Festival brought us Romeo and Juliet at the Malachi. A great performance of a great play and a fitting finale to a fine Festival. It will all be back next year, but in the meantime you can relive the night through some pictures.

Shakespeare is coming back to Oberon
November 27, 2025 in Community and Entertainment

If you loved the 2025 Oberon Shakespeare Festival (and who would admit to not loving it?) it's on again bigger and better in March 2026. A feast with entertainment at the Malachi, workshops and shows at the markets and "Romeo and Juliet" in the Common. What more could you want?

For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
