The Reef Reserve

Located on the shore of Lake Oberon, the Reef Reserve can be found by following the appropriately named "The Reef Road", which runs of Abercrombie Road just outside Oberon. The site offers all that would be expected of a lakeside spot except swimming - at more than 1,000 metres above sea level and fed by melting snow it's classed as an alpine lake and the water never quite gets to a temperature compatible with human life.

There's plenty of fishing to be had, with the lake regularly stocked with trout. Boats and canoes are allowed on the lake provided they are either unpowered or have electric motors. Leave the jet ski at home. Because of the water temperature, life jackets must be worn in case you fall in.

The area is managed and maintained by Oberon Council.
